The revised fees would add an average of $55.00
to the current cost of immigration applications and it would increase
the biometrics fee by $20.00 for certain immigration applications.
Mr. Nachman, a Business Immigration Attorney and Professor of
Immigration and Nationality Law at Fairleigh Dickinson University,
states: “Over the years there have been several increases
in the immigration benefits fees but, generally, we have seen
little curtailment in the processing times for immigration benefits.
It will be interesting to see if the proposed increase works the
“magic” that the government has attempted to achieve
in the past.”
The revised fee structure was announced in proposed
regulations in the Federal Register which provides for a thirty
(30) day comment period. The revised fee schedule is aimed at
enhancing benefits-related immigration services in the United
States and to help reduce the significant backlogs in processing
times that have resulted in such things as the separation of family
members for years.
Mr. Nachman states: “Even with the billions
of dollars that the Legacy INS received through the 245(i) program
and that the CIS receives from the Premium Processing Program,
immigration practitioners continue to still see their business
and family clients suffer from long delays in processing times.”
